NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center plans to award a sole source contract to Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, for the provision of the Main Electronics Box (MEB) components supporting the OSIRIS-REx mission. This includes the interface control and data handling, low voltage power supply electronics, and two Government-furnished Focal Plane Electronics cards for the OSIRIS-REx OVIRS instrument. The OSIRIS-REx mission, scheduled for launch in 2016, aims to collect and return samples from a near-Earth asteroid, providing valuable data on the origins of the solar system and potentially organic molecules related to the emergence of life on Earth. The OVIRS instrument plays a critical role in characterizing the asteroid by capturing visible and infrared spectral data to support these mission goals. Southwest Research Institute is uniquely positioned to fulfill this requirement due to their prior experience and proven heritage hardware design, which lowers technical and schedule risks for the OVIRS instrument development. Although the Government intends to proceed with a sole source approach, other interested parties are invited to submit their capabilities by January 5, 2012, for consideration of a competitive process. The responses will solely inform the Government's discretion on competition. Oral communications are not accepted, and all responsible sources may submit offers. The contract will not acquire commercial items under FAR Part 12, and the NASA Ombudsman, Nancy A. Abel, is available to address concerns or inquiries related to the procurement process.
