STATEMENT OF NEED James J. Peters VA Medical Center 130 West Kingsbridge Road Bronx, NY 10468 GENERAL INFORMATION Title of Project: Navilas 577 Navigated Laser System Scope of Work: The Ophthalmology Department at the Bronx VA Medical Center is looking to purchase a Navilas 577 Laser System with accessories which will allow doctors to perform retinal photocoagulation for the treatment of clinically significant Diabetic Macular Edema (Focal or Grid laser), Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (Pan Retinal Photocoagulation), Sub-retinal (Choroidal) Neovascularization (Focal Laser), along with central and branch retinal vein occlusion, lattice degeneration, retinal tears and detachment. The Navilas 577 Laser system is the most compact all-digital system for navigated focal and peripheral laser treatments. It integrates diagnostics with laser therapy and allows a preplanned, computer-guided and digitally documented treatment to be performed by the retina specialist. The Navilas laser offers greater safety profile with computer initiated automatic stop if the patient moves, thus avoiding Photocoagulation to adjacent and potentially high-risk areas. The unique ergonomics of the laser provide treatment comfort for patient and doctor alike. To reduce glare and increase patient comfort, the infrared illumination with digital documentation function can be activated at any time. It is resident and teaching friendly as the supervisor can direct and in real-time observe treatment while resident is operating the laser. Additionally, this laser allows for contact and non-contact laser application. As a portion of patients are not tolerant to contact lens application for the duration of procedure, this laser provides an added benefit.
