The Department of Veterans Affairs, specifically the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, plans to contract exclusively with Medtronic, Inc. for the procurement of temporary pacemakers. These devices are intended for temporary heart stimulation in patients experiencing rhythm disturbances and conduction defects, including those who are acutely ill or recovering from open-heart surgery. The contract is justified under FAR 6.302-1(a)(2), which allows for sole source procurement when only one supplier can meet the agency’s specific requirements. Medtronic's pacemakers, offering both single and dual chamber pacing capabilities, are considered unique in fulfilling this medical need. The agency has issued a notice of intent to sole source and invited other potential suppliers to express their interest and capability to provide these pacemakers by a specified deadline. However, the government retains discretion over whether to proceed with competitive procurement based on any responses received. No formal solicitation has been released, and all inquiries should be directed via email to the designated VA contact. This approach ensures the VA can efficiently secure critical medical devices while allowing a limited opportunity for competition if alternative capable sources are identified.

General Info

VA sole sources temporary pacemakers from Medtronic for heart rhythm patients under FAR 6.302-1(a)(2).
