The Federal Prison Industries, Inc. (FPI) Board of Directors has decided to waive FPI's mandatory source status for items classified under Federal Supply Classification (FSC) code 7240, which covers Household and Commercial Utility Containers. While FPI will continue manufacturing these items, all sales will now be conducted through non-mandatory channels, allowing federal buyers to procure these goods from other sources if they choose. This change takes effect immediately and reflects a prior resolution by the Board to eliminate mandatory sourcing for products where FPI’s share of federal procurement reached 20 percent or more. This action signifies a shift in FPI’s role in federal supply procurement for the specified product category, potentially opening the market to more competitive purchasing options. Entities interested in seeking further clarification or raising questions regarding this decision may do so at any time by contacting the FPI Board of Directors via correspondence addressed to the Chief Administrative Officer at the Washington, DC office of Federal Prison Industries.
