The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to negotiate a sole source contract with the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology for the delivery of six educational kiosks intended for installation at wildlife refuge centers. These kiosks, equipped with the eBird Trail Tracker software, will provide visitors with interactive materials such as site maps, audio, video, photographs, and real-time bird sighting data gathered by the Cornell Lab. This information supports both public education and scientific research by enabling visitors to engage in bird watching and interpretation activities. The contract also incorporates non-formal citizen science programs like Project Nest Watch and Project Feeder Watch, which encourage volunteers to monitor bird populations and contribute valuable data on bird distribution, migration, and abundance. In addition to the kiosks, the contract includes bird-focused educational curricula such as Bird Sleuth and Celebrate Urban Birds, which integrate citizen science components aimed at fostering science inquiry among adults and children. The combined use of these programs and kiosk technologies generates actionable data that benefit biologists, ecologists, and researchers studying avian conservation. The total estimated value of the acquisition is approximately $50,000, and the contract is managed under the Department of the Interior’s Fish and Wildlife Service Headquarters located in Falls Church, Virginia.
