The Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management is set to award a sole source contract valued at $25,000 to the Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI) for research and coordination services related to the Bering Glacier. This contract, following FAR guidelines, involves MTRI working closely with Southern University of Baton Rouge scientists at the Bering Glacier camp to conduct studies on global climate change, glacier ablation, bathymetry, water quality, salinity intrusion, and glacial thinning. MTRI’s responsibilities include coordinating scientific efforts, producing comprehensive reports on water quality, glacier ablation status, and compiling a monograph summarizing multi-year research findings at the glacier. With a performance period from late July 2007 through January 2008, MTRI will also provide training and on-site expertise in coastal oceanography and climate change research. Their unique expertise encompasses GIS, remote sensing technology, and the integration of multidisciplinary scientific data to support BLM management objectives. This contract is not open for competitive bidding due to MTRI’s specialized qualifications and established history of involvement in Bering Glacier research, with prior work well documented in scientific literature. The effort is to be managed through the Bureau’s Alaska State Office located in Anchorage, Alaska.
