The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), representing the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), is seeking a contractor to operate the Caenorhabditis Genetics Center (CGC). The contractor will be responsible for acquiring, maintaining, and distributing a large collection of wild-type and mutant strains of Caenorhabditis elegans and related nematode species, supporting their characterization, and promoting research using C. elegans as a biological model. The CGC’s current collection comprises approximately 7,000 strains, with an expected annual acquisition of 800 to 1,000 new strains from collaborating laboratories. These strains must be cultured, decontaminated, preserved both as frozen replicates and, when necessary, as active stocks. Additional responsibilities include conducting annual survival tests on a subset of frozen strains to prevent loss, exploring improved methods for preservation and distribution, and managing an up-to-date computer-based database containing comprehensive information on the collection. The contract is planned as a single cost reimbursement award for a five-year period starting around June 1, 2007. The solicitation was to be released electronically by early June 2006, with proposals due by mid-August 2006. Interested parties must download the solicitation and any amendments independently from the designated government website and monitor it regularly for updates. The contract specialists and points of contact are identified for assistance, but the government does not guarantee an award by issuing this announcement. This engagement is crucial to maintaining a vital resource that supports a broad spectrum of biomedical research using C. elegans as a model organism.

Full Description

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), on behalf of the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), requires the services of a contractor to continue the operation of the Caenorhabditis Genetics Center (CGC) to acquire, maintain and distribute wild-type and mutant strains of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) and related nematode species, to characterize these strains, and to stimulate research using C. elegans as a model system. The CGC is expected to provide a genetic resource to investigators using C. elegans as a model in biological research. The CGC currently contains approximately 7000 strains that must be maintained on an on-going basis. Approximately 800-1000 strains of C. elegans shall be acquired each year from collaborating laboratories. Acquisitions shall be subcultured, cleaned of contaminants, stored as frozen replicates, and, if necessary, as active stocks. Some of the other tasks include conducting yearly survival tests on a limited number of frozen strains to ensure that long-term storage of strains does not result in strain loss, testing potentially advantageous new methods for strain storage and/or distribution as needed to ensure the survival of strains, and maintaining the current computer-based storage and retrieval system which contains all relevant data about the collection. It is anticipated that one cost reimbursement contract award will be made for a period of five years beginning on or about June 1, 2007. The solicitation will be available electronically on or about June 9, 2006 and may be accessed through the Internet at the following address: http://www.fedbizopps.gov. under the NHLBI posting section. Proposals will be due on or about August 11, 2006. Offerors are responsible for downloading their own copy of the solicitation and amendments and for routinely checking the Internet site for any possible solicitation amendments that may be issued by the Government. This advertisement does not commit the Government to award a contract.

Translational Centers Using Microphysiological Systems for Infectious Diseases (U54 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Solicitation # RFA-AI-28-012
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has issued solicitation RFA-AI-28-012 to establish a consortium of Translational Centers Using Microphysiological Systems for Infectious Diseases (TCMID). The primary objective is to refine and validate human tissue models using Microphysiological Systems (MPS) to a level consistent with regulatory qualifications, thereby promoting their adoption by product developers and reducing reliance on laboratory animals. This initiative aligns with NIH and FDA guidance on New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to accelerate the development of safer medical interventions by capturing human variability and patient-specific characteristics. The program is structured around an Administrative Core, a Qualification Core, and Scientific Cores, with a heavy emphasis on technical readiness, reproducibility, and regulatory acceptance. Key deliverables include the validation of assays for specific endpoints and the submission of regulatory packages. Applicants must be domestic entities, as foreign organizations and foreign subawards are strictly prohibited. Required personnel must possess deep expertise in infectious diseases, MPS platforms, bioinformatics, and FDA submission processes. Applications are due by January 29, 2027, and must be submitted via the NIH ASSIST system or approved institutional system-to-system solutions. Evaluation is based on an overall impact score considering the project's significance, the suitability of the investigators, and the quality of the institutional environment. Mandatory application components include a Data Management and Sharing Plan and a Benchmarks and Timeline PDF not exceeding six pages. Awardees must also adhere to strict cybersecurity incident reporting guidelines, notifying HHS within 48 hours of any discovery.
