The Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL/RX) is commemorating its 100th anniversary in 2017, marking a century of significant advancements in materials science and engineering. Originating from McCook Field, where early aircraft materials made of fabric and wood were developed, the directorate has since evolved to focus on cutting-edge technologies across propulsion, structural systems, sensors, and computing materials. Its scope includes the full lifecycle from development to production and sustainment, with substantial contributions impacting government, industry, and academia. The Department of Defense, through AFRL/RX, issued a sources-sought solicitation (RFI-AFRL-RQKM-2015-0028) seeking innovative ideas or opportunities to celebrate this milestone. The solicitation, posted in May 2015, is aimed at identifying potential sources for commemorative events or activities to highlight the directorate’s century-long legacy. The contract is managed under NAICS code 541712, related to research and development in physical, engineering, and life sciences, and the contracting officer handling this opportunity is Amanda Q. Smith, based at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

2017 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (AFRL/RX). The directorate is interested in celebrating 100 years of contribution to the fields of science and engineering. AFRL/RX holds roots dating back to McCook Field where research materials for early aircraft constructed of fabrics and wood were developed. Technology development springing from that seedling has evolved into a highly complex array of technologies ranging from materials for cutting-edge propulsion and structural systems to materials for next generation sensors and computing. The directorate also supports production and sustainment of these materials from inception to disposal and has made significant impacts to government, industry, and academia. The Materials and Manufacturing Directorate is evaluating ways which celebrating one hundred years of contributions to science and technology and opportunities to highlight this monumental milestone.
