Big Basin Redwoods State Park General Plan Supplemental EIR for the Reimagining Big Basin Redwoods State Park Facilities Management Plan and General Plan

The California Department of Parks and Recreation is implementing the Reimagining Big Basin Redwoods State Park project to address the destruction of park facilities caused by the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex fire. This initiative involves the adoption of a Facilities Management Plan to guide the stewardship and rebuilding of 19 identified sites across five zones in the park's Focus Area, alongside amendments to the 2013 General Plan to ensure consistency and clarity. The project is managed under State Clearinghouse number 2001112104 and is led by the Department of Parks and Recreation, with PlaceWorks serving as the consulting firm. To comply with the California Environmental Quality Act, a Supplemental Environmental Impact Report was prepared and certified by the California State Park and Recreation Commission on July 2, 2026. The environmental review identified significant and unavoidable impacts on biological resources, specifically the marbled murrelet, leading to the adoption of a Statement of Overriding Considerations. Project execution requires strict adherence to the California Building Code, California Fire Code, and Secretary of the Interior's Standards for historic fabric reconstruction. Operational requirements include daily wildlife inspections by approved biologists, the use of standard best management practices for erosion and dust control, and coordination with local jurisdictions for traffic and equipment delivery.
