Bombay Beach Wetland Enhancement Project

The Bombay Beach Wetland Enhancement Project, under the jurisdiction of the Regional Water Quality Control Board, Region 7 – Colorado River Basin, aims to restore approximately 790 acres of exposed lakebed at the receding Salton Sea, which is under threat from declining shallow groundwater levels. The project will implement a range of habitat restoration activities including the re-establishment and enhancement of shallow water habitats, native vegetation improvement, and the removal of invasive species to rehabilitate ecological functions and promote biodiversity. These efforts are covered under the Statewide Restoration General Order WQ 2022-0048-DWQ issued by the California Water Boards. In addition to ecological recovery, the project will create new public recreational opportunities, integrating community access and environmental stewardship. The project is forecasted with a posted date of July 20, 2026, and will be carried out in California near the Salton Sea.
