Bringing Rapid Innovation to Distributed Green Energy with Cryo-Compressed Hydrogen

The project titled Bringing Rapid Innovation to Distributed Green Energy with Cryo-Compressed Hydrogen, identified by solicitation number EPC-25-060, is an initiative overseen by the California Energy Commission. The primary objective is to design, build, and demonstrate a cost-effective cryo-compressed hydrogen (CcH2) distribution system to provide zero-emission electricity for California ratepayers. This system is intended to address grid supply constraints and electrification challenges by providing hydrogen-to-power solutions for commercial operations, such as battery-electric vehicle charging, thereby reducing the need for costly grid infrastructure upgrades. Key technical goals include the development of a high-capacity CcH2 trailer and a cryo-cooler that is 50% less expensive than traditional hydrogen liquefaction at similar scales. The scope of work involves the design and development of a high-capacity CcH2 trailer, a filling station, and a cryo-cooling system. Procurement and installation activities, including equipment assembly and rigorous operational reliability testing, will take place at WestAir's facility located at 1521 W Anaheim St, Long Beach, California. Following assembly, the mobile distribution platform will undergo commercial demonstration in a real-world environment to validate its performance, efficiency, and scalability. All operations must adhere to a specific hydrogen safety plan to ensure compliance with safety rules. The project will conclude with a knowledge transfer phase and a comprehensive analysis of the economic, environmental, and technological benefits to promote broader adoption of the technology.
