Butte Fire Center Replacement Project

The Butte Fire Center Replacement Project, managed by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), involves the partial demolition and reconstruction of facilities on a 16-acre site located at 6540 Steiffer Road in Magalia, Butte County. The scope of work includes the demolition of approximately 20 to 25 historic buildings and the construction of 20 new structures totaling 67,331 square feet. Additional infrastructure includes four solar photovoltaic covered parking canopies, a fueling area canopy, a vehicle wash area canopy, and various onsite improvements such as landscaping, lighting, water distribution, and internal access. Certain existing structures, including the mess hall, three crew dormitories, an apparatus garage, and a saw/tool shop, will be retained. The project is subject to strict regulatory compliance, including the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the Americans with Disabilities Act, and NESHAP and Cal/OSHA guidelines for hazardous materials removal. Environmental oversight includes a Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting Program and a Construction General Permit from the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board. Key considerations include the protection of tribal cultural resources through consultation with California Native American tribes and the management of hazardous materials in demolished buildings. The project was formally approved in September 2026 following the completion of a Final Environmental Impact Report.
