The project would use modular, transportable kilns, each 10 cubic yards in size, to convert woody biomass into biochar through a thermal conversion (i.e., pyrolysis) process. Through this process, shredded sustainably sourced biomass would be loaded into kilns and heated to high temperatures under constant vacuum to initiate the thermal conversion. This results in the production of biochar with no visible emissions and minimal particulate and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
