City of Los Angeles Sidewalk Repair Program (Project)

The City of Los Angeles Sidewalk Repair Program is a citywide initiative covering approximately 467 square miles, designed to improve accessibility for persons with mobility disabilities in compliance with local, state, and federal requirements. This project is implemented pursuant to the Willits Settlement and is governed by ordinance LAMC 62.104.1, which streamlines the review and approval process for sidewalk repairs. The scope of work includes curb ramp repairs, crosswalk paving, utility work, and comprehensive street tree management involving retention, removal, replacement, canopy pruning, and root pruning. The program is scheduled to include applicable utility work for a duration of 30 years. To facilitate efficiency, the new ordinance establishes parameters for ministerial approvals to avoid further environmental reviews for most repairs, while providing a streamlined discretionary process for projects falling outside those parameters or those involving the removal of three or more street trees. The project adheres to Mandatory Project Design Features and a revised Street Tree Retention, Removal and Replacement Policy. Official approval was granted by the City Council and Mayor on August 6, 2026, following the certification of the Recirculated Environmental Impact Report and the 2021 Environmental Impact Report to fulfill California Environmental Quality Act requirements.
