The New York State Clean Energy Internship Program, administered by NYSERDA, is a workforce development initiative aimed at strengthening the clean energy talent pipeline by connecting New York State businesses with students and recent graduates seeking paid internship opportunities within the clean energy sector. Eligible businesses, which must be registered and have a physical presence in New York State, can receive reimbursement for a portion of intern wages, supporting entry-level work experience in clean energy careers. The program emphasizes meaningful internships that introduce interns to clean energy job functions, with clear stipulations such as a maximum wage rate of $25 per hour and a cap on reimbursable internship hours, generally set at 480 hours per intern within a 12-month period. Intern candidates must primarily be New York State residents, and eligibility criteria have been expanded over time to include workforce training organizations and technical training providers focused on clean energy technologies. The program has a funding allocation of $4.7 million available as of the latest revision, with the application deadline extended to December 30, 2025. NYSERDA maintains strict rules to prevent overlap with other funding sources, ensuring that the same staff or project is not funded through multiple contracts or grants. The eligibility requirements for businesses and interns have been refined to include provisions related to multiple locations and related entities, priority populations, and the removal of specific age limits for certain groups. Applications and reimbursements are managed through the NYSERDA portal, and the program excludes academic or government entities. Additionally, remote internships are permitted but no longer tied to COVID-19 restrictions, requiring preapproval. Overall, this program is designed to facilitate practical clean energy experience for interns while providing financial support to New York businesses investing in workforce development within the clean energy industry.
