AI Contract Overview
This NASA SBIR solicitation focuses on the development of a collaborative robot enabled active microwave thermography system for the nondestructive evaluation of regolith based materials and structures in space. As part of the Moon to Mars Planetary Autonomous Construction Technology project, Texas Research Institute Austin and the Missouri University of Science and Technology will produce a prototype tool designed to inspect lunar habitats, landing pads, and other infrastructure to ensure structural health and safety for deep spaceflight. The project aims to deliver a mobile and flexible inspection system combining active microwave thermography with collaborative robotics and specialized software. Beyond its immediate application in lunar construction, the technology is intended for broader commercial use in heat shield and composite inspections, as well as terrestrial concrete evaluation. This effort is designated as a total small business set aside and will be performed in Austin, Texas.

Full Description
Benefits: Active microwave thermography is a multi-functional nondestructive evaluation tool: there are many mission options, both for in-space/on-Earth use. Immediate insertion would be associated with the MMPACT missions, but due to its versatility, it can impact many areas including, but not limited to: heat shield inspection, composite inspection, on-Earth concrete inspection, and many others. Per TRI Austin’s Phase II proposal, commercialization focuses on active microwave thermography (AMT) and enabling technology (collaborative robotics – Co-bots). AMT is a unique inspection capability and can be commercialized via partners (NDTSolutions). Co-bot enabled NDE will greatly enhance inspection flexibility/capability and will be developed and commercialized as its own technology area.
