Full Description

In September 1994 the Santa Monica City Council adopted the Santa Monica Sustainable City Program which set long-term internal and Citywide goals for sustainability. The Sustainable City Plan is celebrating over 30 years since its adoption and addresses 9 main goal areas. These include: 1) Resource Conservation, (2) Environmental and Public Health, (3) Transportation, (4) Economic Development, (5) Open Space and Land Use, (6) Housing, (7) Community Education and Civic Participation, (8) Human Dignity, and (9) Arts and Culture. The Sustainable City Plan is continually evolving and adapting to community priorities and sustainability best practices and remains part of the enduring strategic policy initiatives for Santa Monica's future. Based on an evaluation of the City's progress in achieving the goals established in the Sustainable City Plan, the City contracted services for a residential greening program, business greening program and partnering on a green business certification program, the Buy Local Santa Monica campaign, and the Sustainable Quality Awards. These programs were designed to educate community stakeholders and engage them in actions that provide meaningful results. A detailed description of the City of Santa Monica's sustainable city initiative including our adopted Guiding Principles, Goals, Goal Areas, Indicators and Targets is included in the Sustainable City Plan (Attachment D - Sustainable City Plan).
