AI Contract Overview
The U.S. Geological Survey is seeking a Great Rivers Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit partner through a cooperative agreement to develop and test hydrodynamically based, passive ichthyoplankton samplers. This research aims to improve the early detection of invasive carp eggs and larvae in the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Basins to prevent the spread of these species into uninvaded waters. The scope of work includes laboratory flume testing using live invasive carp, field-scale testing alongside environmental DNA technologies, seeking patents for successful designs, and facilitating technology transfer to various government and tribal partners. Expected deliverables include peer-reviewed publications, oral presentations, and data releases adhering to USGS data management guidelines. The funding opportunity has an award ceiling and total program funding of 300,000 dollars, with one expected award. Applications must be submitted via Grants.gov by December 7, 2026, and must be filed by an Authorized Organization Representative. Proposals are evaluated based on purpose and relevance, technical approach, qualifications and past performance, and budget clarity. Applicants must be registered in SAM.gov and provide comprehensive documentation, including SF-424 forms, biographical sketches, and current and pending support records. The award is governed by DOI and USGS general terms and conditions, with payments processed through the Treasury Automated Standard Application for Payments system.

Full Description
The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a Great Rivers CESU partner for research to develop and test hydrodynamically based, passive ichthyoplankton samplers for capture of downstream-drifting invasive carp eggs and larvae in rivers.
Invasive carp–bighead (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) silver (H. molitrix), grass (Ctenopharyngodon idella), and black (Mylopharyngodon piceus) carp–are native to Southeast Asia and have spread throughout much of the Mississippi River Basin since their escape from private, wastewater, and aquaculture ponds in the 1980's. Technologies allowing for early detection of these species, especially evidence of natural reproduction, are needed by state and federal agencies throughout the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Basins to control the spread of invasive carp and assess risk to uninvaded waters. Invasive carp can make long-distance spawning migrations upriver from adult population fronts to uninvaded waters to spawn. As such, ichthyoplankton may be the first evidence of invasive carp in uninvaded waters
