The South Central VA Health Care Network (VISN 16) plans to procure MRSA testing equipment exclusively from Cepheid, located in Sunnyvale, California. The contract involves the delivery of three GeneXpert 8 Testing Site Systems, five GeneXpert 16 Testing Site Systems, and related expendable supplies. The GeneXpert system is uniquely capable of providing automated, continuous surveillance for patients colonized with antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), a critical factor in controlling hospital infections. This equipment is intended to support the VA's national MRSA initiative by enabling rapid identification and isolation of infected patients, thereby preventing the spread of infections within healthcare facilities. Pricing for reagents is also being sought through September 2008, with orders to be placed as needed under commercial item procedures authorized by FAR 6.302-1, which allows sole source procurement when only one responsible source is available. This sole source procurement is justified on the basis that Cepheid’s GeneXpert system uniquely meets the agency’s requirements, with no suitable alternatives identified to fulfill the need. Although this is not a solicitation for competitive quotes, other firms capable of providing the specified equipment are invited to submit written notifications and evidence of capability within five days of this notice’s posting. The Department of Veterans Affairs retains full discretion to determine whether to open competition after reviewing any potential responses. The procurement falls under NAICS code 334519, with a small business size standard of 500 employees. The contract efforts are managed through the 256-NETWORK Contract Office 16 located in Ridgeland, Mississippi.
