DDTP Diabetes Surveillance Alaska Area

The contract focuses on maintaining and enhancing one of the most comprehensive diabetes surveillance systems for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations within the Alaska Area, a program that has been operational since 1985. It involves continuous statewide monitoring of diabetes prevalence, as well as tracking serious complications such as renal failure, amputations, and blindness among AI/AN communities in Alaska. The program provides updated prevalence data at both regional and statewide levels to all Alaska Area diabetes grant sites, supporting their clinical and primary prevention programming in compliance with grant requirements. The data surveillance team conducts site visits to various regions to update the epidemiology registry by reviewing charts and ensuring accurate coding for diabetes, prediabetes, and diabetes during pregnancy according to current International Classification of Diseases (ICD) standards. Besides data collection and management, the program contributes to the broader scientific community by sharing findings through peer-reviewed publications when appropriate. This effort is supported through a total small business set-aside contract managed by the Indian Health Service under NAICS code 541611, focused on providing expert services in health care-related research and surveillance.
