The Department of the Navy organized a Waste to Energy Industry Forum on July 29, 2011, at the Washington D.C. Navy Yard to address renewable energy goals and waste-to-energy conversion technologies. The forum aimed to facilitate information sharing on the Department of the Navy’s renewable energy objectives, financing options, policies impacting the conversion technology (CT) industry, and to foster dialogue that would enhance the Navy’s acquisition strategies for renewable energy from waste. Attendees included personnel from the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Army, alongside industry representatives such as technology developers, project developers, and facility or municipality operators. Selection for attendance was competitive, with specific slots allocated to ensure a diverse representation across these categories. The event featured a morning session presenting an overview of current renewable energy goals, approaches, constraints, and policy frameworks relevant to the CT sector. A Request for Information (RFI) was used to identify potential attendees from the CT community, with slots allocated as twenty each for technology and project developers, and ten for facility operators or municipality representatives. Selection prioritized early acceptable responses and relevant technological experience to ensure industry diversity. The forum was a one-day event hosted by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Systems and Experimental Warfare Center under the Department of Defense, emphasizing collaboration between military branches and the waste-to-energy industry to advance renewable energy initiatives.
