F--NOTICE OF INTENT - TO ISSUE A SINGLE SOURCE AWARD FOR GENETIC VARIATION IN MOUNTAIN QUAIL TO IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY

The contract is a single source award intended for Idaho State University to conduct a research study analyzing genetic variation in Mountain Quail across their historic range. The scope involves examining between 100 to 200 samples to quantify genetic similarities and differences among various populations, specifically focusing on presumed pictus (Sierra), palmeri (Oregon), remophilus (Mojave), and western Idaho groups. The study will employ microsatellite loci screening, drawing from about 40 microsatellite sites based on galliform genetic literature, with the final analysis focusing on approximately 10 variable loci. Samples will be processed through the university’s CORE facility to generate data that enables comparison of genetic variation across the defined populations. The deliverables include detailed reports and data on range-wide genetic variability in Mountain Quail, with all findings to be submitted to the requesting Service by September 30, 2005. This effort is coordinated by the Department of the Interior’s Fish and Wildlife Service headquarters, with the contract announced on July 1, 2004. The project aims to enhance understanding of genetic diversity within Mountain Quail, which could support conservation and management efforts for this species.
