The contract seeks to develop new educational materials focused on the Lincolnville National Register Historic District, a significant post-emancipation Black community in St. Augustine, Florida. It addresses the lack of comprehensive resources on Black education in this area while emphasizing the preservation of historic buildings and archaeological sites integral to the community's heritage. The initiative responds to contemporary challenges such as over-development, gentrification, demolition threats, flooding, and increased tourism, which collectively jeopardize the district’s cultural fabric. To manage growing visitor interest and protect local infrastructure, the project will create a traveling pop-up exhibit and an interactive StoryMap that provide accessible in-person and online historical content. The main objective is to produce a high-quality, professional exhibit adaptable to various spaces, including those unable to house artifacts, with clear and engaging graphics that avoid overcrowding. The exhibit will incorporate the voices and experiences of Lincolnville's descendant community, supported by diverse primary resources to ensure thorough storytelling. Ultimately, the project aims to sustain a strong sense of place and highlight generational progress within this historic Black community for long-term use by local museums and institutions. The solicitation is managed by the City of St. Augustine’s Planning and Building department, with key contacts including the City Archaeologist and Procurement Specialist.

Full Description

There is a critical need for new and accessible educational materials related to the Lincolnville NRHD, a post-emancipation community. While there has been increased awareness of the contributions of Black Americans on a city and regional level, there has been no comprehensive exploration of Black education in the community. This grant will also emphasize the importance of preserving the remaining buildings and archaeological sites, all of which contribute to the living fabric of the City. In recent years, Lincolnville has been subject to these increasing threats: Increased urban density Over-development due to short term rentals Gentrification and the loss of a descendant community Demolition of NRHD contributing structures Vulnerability to flooding and sea level rise Increased tourism Despite the increased interest in visiting Black sites, the volume of visitors is adding additional stress on local infrastructure. This project will meet a growing demand for Black history while redirecting visitors to museums (and online resources) that can accommodate increased traffic. The development of a traveling pop-up exhibit and StoryMap will allow visitors to interact with history both in person and online. The content is designed to incorporate historical elements that are currently difficult to access and synthesize. The overall goal is to maintain a sense of place and generational progress for this significant Black community in the Nation's Oldest City. The ultimate goal of this project will be to produce a professional, high-quality exhibit that can be used in flexible spaces, with or without artifacts (to accommodate spaces that can't store/display them). Graphics should be easy to read and informative without being overcrowded with text and graphics. We are fortunate to still have members of the descendant community in the local area, and we want their voices and experiences to be included within the narrative. The abundance and variety of primary resources available should create a well-rounded exhibit that can be reused for many years at local museums and institutions.
