The U.S. Army Research, Development, and Engineering Command, Soldier Systems Center in Natick, MA, is conducting a market investigation to identify potential flame retardant (FR) coatings or topical treatments for the 500 denier Nylon Cordura outer shell fabric used on the Army’s Outer Tactical Vest (OTV). The objective is to enhance the vest’s flame protection properties while ensuring the treated fabric meets or exceeds existing performance standards outlined in military specification OC/PD 00-02G. Critical requirements include flame retardancy focusing on durability, increased ignition time, and reduced melting or dripping, as well as conformity to current infrared spectral, visual color, and physical performance standards. Additionally, the treatment ideally should be applicable to other Nylon Cordura fabrics currently in use. Interested companies are invited to submit detailed product information within 30 days of the synopsis publication, including technical data, test methodologies (such as ASTM or NFPA 701), certification and compliance details, product cost, and relevant company experience. Samples can also be submitted for government testing, with the understanding that they will not be returned and no payment will be provided, and testing results will only be shared with the submitting companies. Compliance with Berry Amendment restrictions is required. The results of this investigation may be used in future updates to military specifications to incorporate FR capabilities. This solicitation is a market survey only, not a request for proposals or quotations. Communications and submissions are directed to Mr. Francisco Martinez at the Natick Soldier Systems Center.
