The contract involves maintenance work on a previously treated 34.3-hectare FireSmart area within the Rocky Mountain House Wildfire Management Area, aimed at reducing wildfire risks to the Crimson Lake Cottage Owners. Most of the site, 34.1 hectares, will undergo selective mulching to reduce surface fuel loads and enhance wildfire mitigation, while a small portion remains as a mulch-free zone. The selective mulching approach is designed to encourage aspen regeneration by creating favorable microsites, contributing to long-term fuel reduction goals and improving the site’s resilience against wildfires. Additionally, the project aims to enhance fire suppression resource capabilities should a wildfire occur. This request for proposal, issued by the Forestry and Parks division of the Government of Canada, is scheduled with a response deadline in early February 2026. The contract focuses on strategic fuel management within a federal framework, with the key contact being Wade Colwell, the contracting authority. The work is set to take place in Alberta and aligns with the government's wildfire risk mitigation and ecosystem management efforts.

Full Description

Project Background - the Rocky Mountain House Wildfire Management Area (Rocky WMA) has identified 34.3 hectares of previously completed FireSmart treatment area that they would like to conduct maintenance work on. 34.1 ha is identified for selective mulching, and the remaining 0.2 ha is identified as a mulch free zone. This area consists of forest fuels that pose a wildfire risk to the Crimson Lake Cottage Owners and can be mitigated through fuel reduction treatments, which will reduce the wildfire threat. Rocky WMA will be mitigating this threat through selective mulching. Project Objectives - The Project will accomplish the following: • It will reduce the wildfire threat that exists to the Crimson Lake Cottage Owners. • The one major goal of the project is to mitigate areas of increased surface fuel loads. The site currently has areas that are showing good aspen regeneration and the goal with the selective mulching is to create more microsites for aspen to flourish. • This work will also increase fire suppression resource capabilities in the event of a wildfire.
