The contract pertains to a wildfire risk reduction project in the Rocky Mountain House Wildfire Management Area, specifically targeting a previously treated 82.1-hectare zone near the Nordegg community. The majority of this area, 79.1 hectares, will undergo selective mulching as a fuel reduction treatment to manage forest surface fuels that pose a wildfire threat. A smaller portion, 3.0 hectares, is designated as a mulch-free zone. The project aims not only to reduce surface fuel loads and mitigate wildfire risks but also to promote aspen regeneration by creating favorable microsites through the mulching process. This approach is intended to enhance local fire suppression capabilities should a wildfire occur. The solicitation, issued by the Government of Canada's Forestry and Parks agency, is a formal request for proposals for the 2025/26 Nordegg FireSmart Maintenance Project, with the response deadline set for early February 2026. The project falls under a federal jurisdiction in Alberta and is being managed by Contracting Authority Wade Colwell. This initiative represents a continued effort to maintain and improve the resilience of forested areas around the Nordegg community by addressing potential wildfire hazards through targeted fuel management practices.

Project Background - the Rocky Mountain House Wildfire Management Area (Rocky WMA) has identified 82.1 hectares of previously completed FireSmart treatment area that they would like to conduct maintenance work on. 79.1 ha is identified for selective mulching, and the remaining 3.0ha is identified as a mulch free zone. This area consists of forest fuels that pose a wildfire risk to the Nordegg community and can be mitigated through fuel reduction treatments, which will reduce the wildfire threat to Nordegg. Rocky WMA will be mitigating this threat through selective mulching. Project Objectives - The Project will accomplish the following: • It will reduce the wildfire threat that exists to Nordegg. • The one major goal of the project is to mitigate areas of increased surface fuel loads. The site currently has areas that are showing good aspen regeneration and the goal with the selective mulching is to create more microsites for aspen to flourish. • This work will also increase fire suppression resource capabilities in the event of a wildfire.
