AI Contract Overview

The Naval Air Systems Command intends to enter into a sole source, firm-fixed price contract with FN Herstal, S.A. for the FY09 procurement of approximately 315 GAU-21 weapon systems. This acquisition includes the necessary supplies and services for manufacture, sparing, and fleet deployment, as well as the production of Common Defense Weapon Systems aircraft interfaces for the UH-1Y, CH-46E, and MH-60R/S platforms. The scope of work further encompasses operator and armorer tool kits, technical manuals for operation and repair, and comprehensive engineering and logistics technical support services. The estimated value of this procurement is 20 million dollars, categorized under NAICS code 332995. Because FN Herstal is the sole designer, developer, and manufacturer of the GAU-21 machine gun and possesses the exclusive technical knowledge and tooling required, the government has determined that no other source is available to satisfy the requirement. This action is justified under FAR 6.302-1 due to insufficient technical data rights available to other parties.
