(End of Provision) BACKGROUND The mission of the dimensional metrology group at NIST is ultra-precise length measurements, which require precise knowledge of the refractive index of air when laser interferometry is used for measurement. NIST is building a device that will serve as the ultimate reference of refractive index. This requirement relates to ancillary metrology (angle and displacement) that is needed in the device. NIST plans to build devices that involve motion of variable length Fabry Perot cavity mirrors. The motion requires careful pre-measurement of a displacement and angle before switching over to Fabry Perot mode. A displacement and angle interferometer is needed to provide this measurement.
