NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center is seeking to procure a Hot Hydrogen Induction Furnace designed to enhance laboratory capabilities for research involving hot hydrogen environments, specifically to support nuclear thermal propulsion, additive manufacturing, and other related projects. The equipment must handle continuous operation temperatures up to 3000 degrees, be compatible with hydrogen operations, and include features such as a water-cooled bell loading configuration, a hot zone suitable for limited interactions with nuclear materials, operator-accessible chamber components for decontamination, and induction heating. Additional specifications include a crucible size of up to 2.5 inches in diameter by 3 inches high, NTRL certification, integrated touch screen controls and data acquisition systems, pyrometers for temperature monitoring, dual burn stack ignitors, thermocouple readings, water flow and pressure interlocks, HEPA filters on exhausts, and hydrogen safety systems capable of shutdown and purge in case of overpressure or ignitor failure. The furnace is also expected to ramp to operating temperature rapidly, within approximately 30 seconds. NASA plans to award this contract as a sole source to Thermal Technology, LLC, under FAR authority 6.302-1, for a commercial item acquisition following FAR Part 12 guidelines. However, the agency invites other capable organizations to express their qualifications by a specified deadline, after which the decision to compete the procurement will be determined. The contract involves not only the furnace but also related services such as installation, shipping, training, and customization to increase the hot zone beyond the base design. The performance location is at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, and key points of contact for the acquisition include Deborah Robertson and Sadie Moulton at the Marshall Space Flight Center.
