The intent is to conduct workshops for department chairpersons which require meeting rooms, overnight accommodation, meals, etc., to be provided as outlined in this document by The Institute of Academic Leadership. Background Increased pressure for accountability in institutions of higher education and constrained budgets have required that academic administrators and department chairpersons become more knowledgeable about management, planning, and leadership techniques. For more than forty years the Institute for Academic Leadership at Florida State University has been conducting training programs in the form of workshops for department chairs from the public universities in the State of Florida. Most of these academic leaders have not had previous administrative experience. Format Of the Workshop The Institute for Academic Leadership conducts a three-day workshop for department chairpersons twice each year, one in the fall and one in the spring or summer. Approximately 75 department chairpersons attend each workshop. Each three-day workshop is designed to provide an intensive and concentrated program of formal presentations, small group seminars and opportunities for discussion and interaction from 8:00 in the morning to 9:00 at night. Discussions and interactions on workshop topics also continue during group breakfasts, lunches and dinners as well as after the evening sessions have ended.
