The Food and Drug Administration is forecasting the procurement of instrumented stairs designed to capture objective ground truth data on various mobility tasks. This equipment is intended to measure stair ascent, descent, turning, weight transfer, step timing, and transitional movements, providing high-fidelity data that level walking systems cannot capture. The primary purpose of this acquisition is to support the validation of advanced human-movement algorithms. By analyzing functional mobility tasks, the agency aims to better assess balance, fall risk, and mobility limitations to improve safe navigation within real-world home and community environments.

BPID: 889 Instrumented stairs are necessary to capture objective ground truth data on stair ascent, descent, turning, weight transfer, step timing, and transitional movements that commonly occur in real-world home and community environments but cannot be adequately measured with level walking systems alone. This equipment will support validation of advanced human-movement algorithms by providing detailed, high-fidelity measurements during functional mobility tasks that are critical for assessing balance, fall risk, mobility limitations, and safe navigation in everyday built environments.
