Real Time Enhanced Fine Tracking in Directed Energy Applications
Solicitation # DAF26TZ05-NV005
The contract seeks the development of a real-time 3D imaging and tracking system to enhance fine tracking capabilities in directed energy applications, particularly for low-flying targets like drones against cluttered backgrounds where traditional 2D imaging struggles. Current systems rely on 2D correlation trackers that require pre-identified target templates, which are unreliable due to limited depth information and perspective distortions. The solution focuses on leveraging 3D coherent imaging, such as digital holography, which provides complex-valued 2.5D images with amplitude and phase data that reveal range information robust to atmospheric scintillation and speckle. This 3D data enables improved pose estimation and aimpoint maintenance critical for fine tracking loops that must operate above 1 kHz to compensate for dynamic aero-optical distortions over long standoff ranges. The system must incorporate active coherent or partially coherent illumination to enable day-night operation while mitigating non-uniform illumination and noise, and must integrate advanced image restoration techniques combining physics-based models and machine learning to correct anisoplanatic phase errors computationally efficiently. The effort is divided into two phases: Phase I requires analysis of existing 3D imaging methods, development of system-level requirements, design of algorithms for enhanced 3D tracking and aimpoint maintenance, and creation of a hardware concept with latency and throughput analysis for real-time closed-loop operation. Phase II will implement and demonstrate a prototype system on high-speed processors, integrating illumination, imaging hardware, and tracking software for real-time performance in either laboratory or outdoor environments. The ultimate goal is to produce a computationally efficient, end-to-end processing pipeline that exploits 3D data to maintain precise aimpoints on non-cooperative targets through turbulent atmospheres. The system must support integration into directed energy platforms and deliver both software algorithms and a validated hardware prototype capable of real-time operation, with emphasis on small business compliance under an SBIR/STTR mandate for entities under 500 employees.
