AI Contract Overview

The Department of Commerce NOAA intends to award a sole-source contract to the University of Hawaii Systems for the use of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology Isotope Laboratory. This simplified acquisition, estimated at less than 150,000 dollars, provides essential Class 1000 clean room facilities, laboratory space, and specialized equipment required for lead-radium dating. The agreement includes access to ultra-clean reagents, stock radioisotopes, and laminar flow hoods, while providing utility support for a NOAA-owned alpha-spectrometer analysis system already located on-site. The University of Hawaii was selected due to its necessary Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing for the storage and use of radioisotopes and its proximity to Honolulu-based NOAA Fisheries scientists. These scientists require frequent access to the facility to purify and analyze fish otolith core assays for age determination. While this is a non-competitive procurement, interested firms were given a seven-day window from the publication date to submit documentation proving they could meet the government's specific technical and geographical requirements.
