AI Contract Overview
Motiv is developing the Low-Gravity Robotic Arm System (L-GRAS) under NASA solicitation NASA-SBIR-158414 to enable scientific sampling in harsh, remote, and low-gravity environments. This project focuses on advancing the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of an extremely lightweight manipulation system designed to preserve mass for deep-space missions. Key technological innovations include specialized actuation seals to prevent dust and contamination, cryogenic operable motor control avionics to reduce power and mass, lightweight actuators, and modular flex arrangements for system scalability. The scope of work is divided into three primary objectives: designing the robotic arm system, fabricating and assembling technology elements, and demonstrating subsystem function and feasibility. Deliverables for this effort include a final report, one prototype actuator, and one prototype controller. The work plan involves comprehensive engineering design, assembly of prototype controllers and actuators, and rigorous testing using actuator dynamometers, integrated flat-sat testing, and air-bearing tables for controllability. This system is intended for a wide range of NASA applications, including sampling on small moons, comets, asteroids, and lunar science efforts via CLPS, as well as supporting Mars mobility platforms and in-situ resource utilization developments.

Full Description
Benefits: The L-GRAS architecture offers scalability for a variety of potential NASA applications. Discovery and New Frontiers destinations interested in pursuing remote sampling on small moons, comets, and asteroids are now addressable. Missions which intend to land on celestial systems with fractional or microgravity environments best leverage the proportional mass savings and controllability to execute delicate sample transfer operations. Lastly, L-GRAS enables small Mars mobility platforms intended to support remote science or fetch operations. Commercialization of access and regular missions to the Moon are underway. With repeated future successes of landings on the Moon, scientific sampling missions will grow in demand through CLPS. The L-GRAS presents as a critical tool to support lunar science efforts. Additionally, manufacturing and outfitting tasks which are rooted in ISRU developments will also benefit from L-GRAS scalability.
