AI Contract Overview
KalScott is developing Low SWaP-C RemoteID devices for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to comply with FAA regulations requiring all UAVs over 250g to report identification, location, and other parameters in real time. Following a successful Phase I SBIR project that demonstrated network-based LTE and broadcast-based Bluetooth devices, the project is transitioning into Phase II. This next stage focuses on refining and flight-testing hardware for LTE and BLE devices, developing a multi-band chip supporting LTE, WiFi, and Bluetooth, and implementing robust data and hardware security protocols. Additional objectives include creating a certification plan, establishing a US-first manufacturing plan, and porting data into FAA servers while maintaining collaborations with NASA, the FAA, and the USAF. This technology is designed to enhance the safety of Next Gen airspace operations, specifically supporting NASA initiatives such as Advanced Air Mobility, Aerial Ports, and High Density Vertiports by bridging various communication protocols. Beyond NASA applications, the system has potential utility for autonomous airfield equipment deconfliction, air traffic monitoring in remote or disaster zones, aerial firefighting interoperability, and as aerial nodes for Smart City IoT implementations. The project is managed under the NASA SBIR/STTR Program as a total small business set-aside, with an investor group providing matching funds for Phase II-E and CCRPP follow-on phases.

Full Description
Benefits: This technology can improve the safety of Next Gen airspace operations where manned traffic will mingle with unmanned aircraft and air taxis. NASA is working on several initiatives such as the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), Aerial Port, and High Density Vertiports (HDV), where this technology may serve as a bridge between several different communications protocols. Non-NASA applications include equipping autonomous airfield equipment to enable deconfliction with taxying aircraft, operating as an organic air traffic monitoring system in remote areas or in disaster zones, providing interoperability and cross-communications in aerial firefighting, etc. This system can be the aerial node for IoT implementations in emerging Smart Cities programs.
