Malibu Middle and High School Campus Specific Plan

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is implementing Phases 2, 3a, and 4a of the Malibu Middle and High School Campus Specific Plan in Malibu, California. This project involves the construction of several new facilities, including an 18,911 square-foot two-story middle school gym with outdoor sports courts, a 9,243 square-foot one-story building for student activities, food services, and special education, and a 333 square-foot broadcasting and media arts building. The scope also includes the development of a middle school quad, walkways, landscaping, on-grade solar installations, grading, and underground utility work. To accommodate these new structures, the project requires the demolition of existing classroom Buildings K and I, seven portable classrooms, and one portable restroom building. The project is subject to specific height restrictions, with buildings not exceeding 36 feet as permitted by the campus plan. Environmental compliance is a critical component, with the project adhering to the California Environmental Quality Act and a certified Final Environmental Impact Report. Approval was granted by the City of Malibu on January 20, 2026, with a formal Notice of Determination signed on January 26, 2026. Additionally, the project incorporates routine maintenance for Environmentally Sensitive Habitat Areas, including weed abatement and erosion control, as approved by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
