Researchers from the University of Chicago and Durham University are collaborating on a project to preserve and control quantum coherence in ultracold molecules for use in quantum information science and quantum-controlled chemistry. By utilizing precision spectroscopy, molecular Bose-Einstein condensates, and theoretical modeling, the team aims to identify symmetry-protected molecular states that resist environmental noise. This effort focuses on investigating spin-exchange symmetries in bi-alkali molecules to create decoherence-free subspaces, which will help establish molecules as a scalable platform for quantum memories and processors. The project divides labor between theoretical calculations at Durham University, which will analyze symmetry-breaking interactions and protected subspaces, and experimental work at the University of Chicago using high-resolution microwave spectroscopy and matter-wave interferometry. Beyond the technical goals of advancing coherent chemical dynamics and precision quantum measurement, the award supports interdisciplinary training for students and strengthens international research partnerships between the United States and the United Kingdom under the NSF-UKRI lead agency opportunity.

Full Description

Researchers from the University of Chicago along with their collaborators at Durham University in the United Kingdom are developing new approaches to preserve and control quantum coherence in ultracold molecules for applications in quantum information science and quantum-controlled chemistry. Molecules offer exciting opportunities for future quantum technologies because they possess electronic, vibrational, rotational, and nuclear-spin degrees of freedom that together form a much richer quantum system than atoms alone. However, these same internal degrees of freedom also make molecular quantum states highly susceptible to environmental noise, presenting a major obstacle to using molecules as reliable quantum memories and processors. The research team will combine precision spectroscopy, ultracold molecular Bose-Einstein condensates, and advanced theoretical modeling to identify symmetry-protected molecular states that naturally resist decoherence while enabling coherent manipulation of quantum information. Their discoveries could establish new principles for protecting quantum information in molecular systems, advance the understanding of coherent chemical dynamics, and broaden the role of molecules as a scalable platform for Quantum Information Science. The project will provide interdisciplinary research opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students, expand outreach programs that engage local high-school students in quantum science, and strengthen international research partnerships through student exchanges and collaborative training between the United States and the United Kingdom. This award is made under the NSF-UKRI lead agency opportunity. The project will investigate how spin-exchange symmetries in ultracold bi-alkali molecules give rise to decoherence-free subspaces that protect quantum information encoded in nuclear-spin states. The theoretical effort at Durham University will develop coupled-channel scattering calculations and symmetry analyses to identify protected molecular subspaces, characterize emergent SU(8)-like symmetry, and quantify symmetry-breaking interactions arising from spin-orbit and hyperfine couplings. The experimental effort at the University of Chicago will employ high-resolution microwave spectroscopy of ultracold Cs₂ molecular Bose-Einstein condensates to observe these protected states, measure their coherence properties, and test theoretical predictions. The project will also develop molecular matter-wave interferometry to probe coherent chemical reactions and investigate quantum many-body effects in atom-molecule conversion dynamics. By integrating precision experiment with quantitative theory, the research will establish a framework for symmetry-protected quantum control in ultracold molecules and advance molecular platforms for quantum information processing, coherent chemistry, and precision quantum measurement. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.

Bolstering Underutilized Industry by Leveraging Technology Transfer (BUILTT) pilot program
Solicitation # 10292026-LR-27
The Department of Energy, in partnership with the National Nuclear Security Administration, has announced the Bolstering Underutilized Industry by Leveraging Technology Transfer (BUILTT) pilot program. This initiative, conducted by the Nevada National Security Sites, Y-12 National Security Complex, and Kansas City National Security Campus, aims to assist qualified U.S. small and medium-sized businesses in manufacturing low-volume, high-impact technologies developed by DOE/NNSA Labs, Plants, and Sites. These technologies, which include specialized optical imaging, radiation and chemical sensing systems, precision electrical components, and advanced materials, often have limited commercial markets but are critical for government mission requirements. Under the program, selected businesses may receive a Cost Reduction License (CRL) for a nominal fee, granting them the rights to produce specified technologies for sale to the DOE, NNSA, and other government customers at pre-negotiated prices. Eligibility is limited to U.S.-based SMBs, with preference given to those near participating sites or those with SBA 8(a) or HUBZone designations. Interested parties are evaluated based on their technical and manufacturing capabilities, financial capacity, and ability to meet regulatory and security requirements. Responses must be submitted to the Technology Partnerships and Intellectual Property Office by April 1, 2027, and are categorized under NAICS code 541715.

Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Enterprise Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO)
Solicitation # FA865226SC003
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Enterprise Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO), solicitation FA8652-26-S-C003, is an overarching enterprise framework designed to acquire innovative commercial products and services. Issued under the authority of 10 USC 3458 and DFARS Subpart 212.70, the CSO establishes a structure for issuing competitive solicitations known as Spirals. These Spirals target a wide range of Areas of Interest (AOI) across the Air, Space, Cyberspace/Electronic Warfare, and Cross-Domain technology domains, including hypersonics, cybersecurity, quantum technologies, and human-machine teaming. Resulting awards may take the form of fixed-price FAR Part 12 contracts or Other Transactions for Prototype (OTP). Foreign participation is strictly prohibited. The acquisition process typically follows a two-step approach for Spirals. In Step One, offerors submit a Commercial Solutions Brief (CSB) consisting of a PowerPoint briefing and a white paper. Those categorized as Selectable are invited to Step Two to submit a full Commercial Solutions Proposal (CSP), which includes a technical proposal, a Statement of Work, and a price proposal with an editable Excel pricing model. Evaluation is conducted via subject-matter expert peer review, focusing on technical merit, applicability, importance to agency programs, and funding availability. Strict security and compliance requirements are in place, including mandatory security risk reviews for all senior and key personnel to mitigate foreign influence. Offerors must also perform an Organizational Conflict of Interest (OCI) analysis and adhere to DoD item unique identification standards (MIL-STD-130) for delivered hardware costing $5,000 or more. Contract administration, including invoicing and payment, is managed electronically through the Wide Area WorkFlow (WAWF) system.
