North Bay Forest Improvement Program - Camp Mendocino

Approximately 66 acres in the Camp Mendocino area near Willits, California will be treated to improve forest health and reduce wildfire risk through targeted vegetation management. Work will be divided into three management units—19 acres, 35 acres, and 12 acres—where selective herbicide applications using the hack-and-squirt method will be applied to tanoak and other non-preferred species. Treatments are designed to remove at least 85 percent of tanoak stems up to 12 inches in diameter at breast height, with priority given to suppressed, defective, or overtopped trees. Shrubby tanoak and stems under four inches in diameter must be treated to prevent resprouting, while a limited number of healthy tanoak individuals will be retained to preserve biodiversity and structural diversity. Larger tanoak trees may also be treated if necessary to achieve desired stand spacing and reduce fuel continuity. All herbicide applications must be conducted by a California DPR-licensed Qualified Applicator (Category B: Forest) or a licensed Pest Control Business, strictly adhering to product labels and County Agricultural Commissioner regulations. The project is covered by a CEQA Categorical Exemption under Section 15304 for minor land alterations, ensuring no significant environmental impact is anticipated. Work is performed on-site in Mendocino County, with inspection and acceptance occurring at the project location.
