North County Recycling and Transfer Station

The Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority is developing the North County Recycling and Transfer Station at the closed Crazy Horse Landfill located at 350 Crazy Horse Canyon Road in Salinas, California. This project aims to restore waste disposal services to North Monterey County and the City of Salinas by establishing a large volume transfer and processing facility. The site will be capable of accepting and transferring up to 400 tons per day of municipal solid waste, recyclables, and organics, with all materials being shipped offsite to recycling markets or the Johnson Canyon Landfill in Gonzales. The facility will feature covered drop-off areas, a household hazardous waste collection area, and enhanced site and traffic infrastructure. Operational hours are scheduled from 7 AM to 4 PM on weekdays and 8 AM to 4 PM on weekends. The project has undergone environmental review pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act, resulting in a Negative Declaration and a Notice of Determination on September 18, 2025, confirming that the project will not have a significant environmental effect. The development complies with the Monterey County Zoning Ordinance for Public/Quasi Public land use and emphasizes strict environmental controls and stormwater management.
