Led by Meharry Medical College in collaboration with Middle Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Microsoft Corporation, and IonQ, this one-year planning project focuses on developing secure immersive health training systems. The initiative addresses critical vulnerabilities in virtual and augmented reality platforms used for clinical training, specifically targeting the risks that quantum computing poses to classical public-key cryptography used in identity management and patient data protection. By convening experts in clinical simulation, information security, and quantum computing, the team aims to create a quantum-resilient reference architecture that ensures privacy-preserving access control and tamper-evident audit logging. The project will deliver a comprehensive research plan, a detailed security architecture with threat analysis, and a graduate mentorship program focused on quantum-resistant cybersecurity. Key objectives include specifying performance requirements and data governance needs to mitigate harvest-now, decrypt-later threats. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the resulting materials and reference designs will be made freely available to educators, clinical trainers, and IT staff to facilitate the broad and secure adoption of extended reality technologies in healthcare education.

Full Description

In healthcare provider organizations, immersive simulation systems include virtual and augmented reality headsets for users to interact with complex digital representations of patient data. However, the digital security protecting this sensitive information is at risk. This one-year planning project, led by Meharry Medical College, seeks to develop an expert-reviewed plan for building secure immersive health training systems. In collaboration with Middle Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Microsoft Corporation, and IonQ, engage in intentionally coordinated convenings bringing together experts in clinical simulation, information security, and quantum computing. The team will establish a partnership and governance agreement, develop a research plan, construct a security architecture with a threat analysis, and design a graduate mentorship program. The activity will provide graduate students with practical knowledge on quantum-resistant cybersecurity and health information protection. The project materials will be made freely available to educators, clinical trainers, and information technology staff for broad adoption. This collaborative planning project establishes the partnership, methods, and reference design required to examine quantum-safe security for immersive systems for clinical training purposes. Identity management, access control, and audit mechanisms in extended reality clinical training platforms and digital patient twins depend on classical public-key cryptography, principally the Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) and elliptic-curve families, both vulnerable to cryptographically relevant quantum computers and to harvest-now, decrypt-later collection. Following curated workshops and other convenings, a comprehensive analysis of current literature and standards, as well as comparative assessment of candidate cryptographic and privacy-preserving techniques are anticipated to lead to 1) specification of security and performance requirements, 2) realistic threat models, 3) data governance and compliance needs, and 4)development of a reference architecture which will incorporate quantum resistant identity management, privacy preserving access control, tamper evident audit logging and low latency computation for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications. The expected results include an integrated, quantum-resilient reference architecture for privacy-preserving clinical extended reality and an implementation ready research plan that reduces technical and organizational risks and advances the secure adoption of immersive technologies in healthcare training. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.

Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO) for Space Domain Awareness (SDA) Solutions.
Solicitation # FA2518-25-S-C001
The United States Space Force, through the Space Acquisition and Integration Office, is executing a Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO) under solicitation FA2518-25-S-C001 to acquire innovative commercial technologies, products, and services that enhance Space Domain Awareness (SDA). The program focuses on improving the ability to detect, characterize, attribute, predict, and target activities in the space domain. This long-term mechanism remains open for five years and utilizes a multi-phase submission process consisting of an initial white paper and PowerPoint briefing, an optional pitch session, and a final full proposal package. Awards are made as FAR-based fixed-price contracts, and the government reserves the right to award some, all, or none of the proposed solutions. A primary focus of the current effort is Area of Interest (AOI) 2025_01, titled Advanced SDA Tools for Research and Analytics (ASTRA), which is a 100 percent small business set-aside. This specific AOI emphasizes research, development, and prototyping for scalable data management, modeling, and agile software prototyping, with an estimated combined funding pool of 1.5 million dollars across related AOIs and a period of performance not exceeding 12 months. Phase I submissions must be unclassified, though subsequent phases may require higher classification levels. Offerors must comply with NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC 2.0 requirements, particularly if handling Controlled Unclassified Information. Participation is restricted to U.S. entities due to national security and export control considerations.
