The USDA SBIR/STTR Topic 8.6 solicitation, managed by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, seeks to improve the quality of life in rural America through the creation and commercialization of science-based technologies. The program focuses on addressing critical economic and social challenges, requiring applicants to explicitly define the rural problem they intend to solve and how their technology will provide a solution. While not limited to agriculture, projects must include objectives to evaluate their impact on the environment, climate mitigation, or the socio-economic development of rural communities. This opportunity is a total small business set-aside for entities with fewer than 500 employees. The USDA is looking for a diverse portfolio of projects that balance high-risk, high-reward innovations with the practical application of existing technologies. Interested parties can find further details through the National Program Leader, Carlos Ortiz, or via the official NIFA website.
