Full Description

SafetySpect Inc. proposes integrating its innovative MoonLight multimode imaging system with environmental sensors and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor plant health in extraterrestrial environments autonomously. This technology aims to provide real-time, non-invasive detection of plant stress, nutrient deficiencies, and diseases, significantly enhancing the efficiency of food production systems aboard NASA missions, such as the ISS, Lunar Gateway, and Mars habitats. The MoonLight system combines hyperspectral reflectance imaging (HRI), hyperspectral fluorescence imaging (HFI), and LiDAR to identify early-stage stress, nutrient deficiencies, and diseases not visible to standard photographic techniques currently used in space-based plant monitoring systems. By integrating additional environmental sensors for CO₂, humidity, temperature, and light intensity, this project will enrich data collection, allowing AI-driven models to effectively correlate plant health indicators with environmental conditions. Funding from NASA will support the adaptation and integration of these sensors into MoonLight, system validation under simulated space conditions, extensive data collection from selected crops, and the development of AI algorithms capable of autonomously detecting and classifying plant stress. Additionally, funds will support the design adaptations necessary for stable operation in low-gravity environments. The primary market is NASA and international space agencies, which require autonomous plant health monitoring technologies for sustainable food production in extraterrestrial habitats. Secondary markets include private space exploration companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin and terrestrial commercial sectors such as vertical farming, greenhouse operations, and agricultural research institutes that demand efficient, resource-optimized plant monitoring solutions for sustainable food production.
Benefits: MoonLight multimode imaging technology supports NASA mission directives by providing autonomous, non-invasive plant health monitoring in space environments. The system’s hyperspectral reflectance imaging (HRI), hyperspectral fluorescence imaging (HFI), and LiDAR capabilities detect early-stage plant stress, nutrient deficiencies, and diseases, crucial for ensuring food security and nutritional quality in extraterrestrial habitats. Integrated environmental sensors for CO₂, humidity, temperature, and light intensity enhance the system’s predictive modeling capabilities, aligning with NASA's objectives for sustainable, autonomous agricultural production in low Earth orbit (LEO), lunar, and Mars missions. The MoonLight system will directly support mission sustainability by reducing astronaut workloads, optimizing resource use, and ensuring stable, high-quality food production, which is vital for long-duration human space exploration. MoonLight technology presents extensive commercialization opportunities beyond NASA missions, particularly in terrestrial markets focused on controlled-environment agriculture (CEA), vertical farming, and sustainable crop production. The advanced multimode imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities enable precise, real-time plant health monitoring, significantly enhancing resource management strategies involving water, nutrients, and lighting. MoonLight's technology can identify plant stress, nutrient deficiencies, and diseases early, allowing timely interventions that boost productivity and reduce operational costs. Indoor and vertical farming operations, driven by the increasing need for efficient agricultural practices in urban and resource-limited environments, represent substantial market segments. MoonLight’s ability to optimize these environments leads to improved crop yields, lower resource usage, and reduced dependence on chemical treatments, making it highly attractive to commercial agriculture businesses. Agricultural research institutes focusing on sustainability and innovation are additional key customers. These institutions can utilize MoonLight’s sophisticated monitoring capabilities for detailed crop analysis, stress detection, and yield forecasting, significantly advancing research outcomes in terrestrial and extraterrestrial agriculture. Moreover, the private space industry, including SpaceX and Blue Origin, represents a stong commercial opportunity. These entities require reliable, autonomous plant health monitoring solutions for their long-duration missions to the Moon, Mars, and other extraterrestrial habitats.

Fast Assessment of Solutions, Therapeutics, Pharmaceuticals, and SupplieS (FASTPASS) Innovative Solutions Opening
Solicitation # ARPA-H-SOL-26-160
The Fast Assessment of Solutions, Therapeutics, Pharmaceuticals, and Supplies (FASTPASS) program, under solicitation ARPA-H-SOL-26-160, is an initiative by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) to develop a near real-time, non-destructive, AI-enabled screening system. The goal is to identify contamination, adulteration, and quality defects in pharmaceutical products through their packaging at ports of entry and other supply-chain nodes using multi-modal sensing and data fusion. This 54-month program is structured into three 18-month phases, culminating in a fieldable platform with validated training materials and integrated documentation capabilities. This procurement is conducted as a multiple-award Other Transaction (OT) Agreement rather than a standard federal contract, meaning it is governed by specific OT articles instead of the Federal Acquisition Regulation. Awards are based on the most advantageous proposals, with primary evaluation factors including innovation, soundness, execution planning, risk management, and team expertise. Payments are fixed and triggered by the successful completion of milestones, managed through the Payment Management System. Proposers must be registered in SAM.gov and provide detailed technical and cost proposals, including a milestone payment schedule and research security disclosures. Amendment 01 specifically updated the cost proposal narrative model and workbook to correct typographical errors and rename appendices.
