GE Aviation of Cincinnati, Ohio, was competitively selected under NASA’s Research Announcement NNH09ZEA001N-SSFW1 to develop advanced low emissions combustor technologies as part of NASA Glenn Research Center’s efforts supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This initiative aims to accelerate critical aeronautics research, focusing on achieving significant reductions in landing and take-off (LTO) NOx emissions by developing combustor concepts that meet the stringent N+2 NOx reduction goals—specifically a 75% reduction compared to the current International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The work is part of NASA's N+2 Subsonic research effort to improve vehicle design trade-offs while simultaneously meeting national noise, emissions, and fuel efficiency performance goals. The contract associated with this effort, known as "N+2 Advanced Low NOx Combustor Technology," targets low emissions combustor development to support the overarching objectives of NASA's Aeronautics Research Program under the Recovery Act. The work is to be conducted at GE Aviation’s facility in Cincinnati, with strict guidelines that prohibit oral communications regarding the project. This announcement serves solely as an informational notice—no request for proposals will follow—while all correspondence must be directed in writing. An ombudsman has been appointed to facilitate the process, underscoring the structured and transparent nature of this government-supported initiative.
