The U.S. Department of Commerce, through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service, is issuing a purchase order for the repair of specific weather monitoring equipment including 16 ice-free wind sensors (ASOS Model 425NWS), 21 dewpoint transmitter assemblies (DTS-1), and 3 Vaisala frequency setting devices. These repairs will be performed exclusively by Vaisala, Inc., the original equipment manufacturer, as market research and extensive searches showed no other qualified sources, particularly no small businesses, capable of providing these specialized repair services. The sole source decision was supported by the lack of responses to a prior Sources Sought notice and thorough searches through government contracting databases and small business registries, confirming Vaisala as the only viable provider. This contract highlights the importance of specialized technical capability and proprietary equipment repair that is exclusive to the original manufacturer. The NAICS code associated with the procurement is 334519, which corresponds to other measuring and controlling device manufacturing. The contracting office is located in Norfolk, VA, and the primary point of contact is an official named Adrian M. Hall. This procurement ensures that critical weather instrumentation is properly maintained and calibrated by a trusted and certified source to support the National Weather Service’s operational requirements.
