At least 30 million people of all ages, gender identifications, sexual orientations, and races/ethnicities suffer from an ED in the United States. Binge Eating Disorder is the most common eating disorder in the United States. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the lifetime prevalence of Binge Eating Disorder in adults is 2.8%. Though less prevalent than Binge Eating Disorder, Anorexia Nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Common risk factors faced by people with EDs include social isolation, family conflict/instability, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, insomnia, self-harm, suicidal ideation, rapid weight loss, and long term medical and dental problems that can lead to medical complications and possibly death.
