The National Science Foundation's Education Innovation and Translation Section has issued a Research Initiation Award under the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program to support junior and mid-career faculty in building or redirecting research programs. This specific project focuses on enhancing the robustness, fairness, and reliability of large language models and multimodal AI systems. The research aims to address critical issues such as inconsistent outputs, hallucinations, and social biases by optimizing continuous prompt representations, grounding responses in verified knowledge sources through retrieval-augmented models, and analyzing multimodal vulnerabilities under adversarial conditions. Beyond the technical objectives, the award emphasizes institutional growth and educational outreach by engaging undergraduate students in hands-on training and developing new educational materials to strengthen research capacity at HBCUs. The project will utilize open-source LLMs and established benchmarks to evaluate success, and all resulting software, datasets, and tools will be released publicly. This initiative aligns with the foundation's mission to advance intellectual merit and create broad societal impacts through the development of trustworthy artificial intelligence.

Full Description

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) through Research Initiation Awards (RIA) provide support for junior and mid-career faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities who are building new research programs or redirecting and rebuilding existing research programs. It is expected that the award will help to further the faculty member's research capability and effectiveness and improve research and teaching at the home institution. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems that generate and interpret human language are increasingly used to support decisions in education, health care, finance, and public services. Although these systems can improve access to information, they may also produce incorrect information with unwarranted confidence, provide inconsistent answers to the same question, or perform less effectively in different social contexts. They can also be overly sensitive to small changes in wording or input, reducing their reliability in real-world applications. This research investigates why these problems occur and develops practical methods to improve the reliability, fairness, and robustness of modern AI systems. The research will also engage undergraduate students in research, provide hands-on training in trustworthy AI, and develop educational materials that strengthen research capacity at HBCUs. The research develops and evaluates new methods for improving the trustworthiness of large language models (LLMs) and related multimodal AI systems. First, the research investigates optimization of continuous prompt representations to systematically identify failure cases that cannot be discovered through conventional text-based prompt searches, enabling the development of more reliable mitigation strategies. Second, the project studies knowledge and bias in retrieval-augmented language models by grounding model responses in verified knowledge sources. Carefully designed synthetic datasets are used to evaluate and mitigate bias while ensuring realism and ethical use. Third, the project investigates multimodal robustness by analyzing how biases introduced through visual and textual inputs affect the behavior of modern language-and-image models under adversarial attacks, distribution shifts, and challenging real-world conditions. Efficient mitigation strategies will be developed to improve robust performance across multimodal tasks. The proposed methods are evaluated using openly available LLMs, established benchmark suites for reliability, fairness, and robustness, and predefined quantitative measures of success. All software, benchmark datasets, and evaluation tools developed through the project will be released as open-source resources to support future research and broader adoption of trustworthy AI. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the Foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.

Solicitation # FA2518-25-S-C001
The United States Space Force, through the Space Acquisition and Integration Office, is executing a Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO) under solicitation FA2518-25-S-C001 to acquire innovative commercial technologies, products, and services that enhance Space Domain Awareness (SDA). The program focuses on improving the ability to detect, characterize, attribute, predict, and target activities in the space domain. This long-term mechanism remains open for five years and utilizes a multi-phase submission process consisting of an initial white paper and PowerPoint briefing, an optional pitch session, and a final full proposal package. Awards are made as FAR-based fixed-price contracts, and the government reserves the right to award some, all, or none of the proposed solutions. A primary focus of the current effort is Area of Interest (AOI) 2025_01, titled Advanced SDA Tools for Research and Analytics (ASTRA), which is a 100 percent small business set-aside. This specific AOI emphasizes research, development, and prototyping for scalable data management, modeling, and agile software prototyping, with an estimated combined funding pool of 1.5 million dollars across related AOIs and a period of performance not exceeding 12 months. Phase I submissions must be unclassified, though subsequent phases may require higher classification levels. Offerors must comply with NIST SP 800-171 and CMMC 2.0 requirements, particularly if handling Controlled Unclassified Information. Participation is restricted to U.S. entities due to national security and export control considerations.
