AI Contract Overview
This contract, titled Retardation Mapping System for Astronomical Mirrors under solicitation NASA-SBIR-158137, focuses on developing a technology to measure polarization birefringence uniformity on non-planar mirrors. The project aims to meet the strict optical resolution requirements of the Habitable Worlds Observatory by achieving a uniformity of approximately 1% across a wavelength range of 250 nm to 1000 nm. Axometrics will execute this through the customization and upgrade of its AxoScan product line, involving the design of new optical retarders and detectors, light source expansion, and system integration. The primary Phase I deliverable consists of test measurements performed on mirror samples provided by NASA. The research and development effort directly supports NASA's mission to detect and characterize exo-Earth planets and provides a scalable metrology solution for future optical telescopes. Beyond astronomical applications, the technology has commercial potential for testing polarization-based reflective coatings in next-generation VR headset pancake lenses. This solicitation is a Total Small Business Set-Aside managed by the NASA SBIR/STTR Program, with performance centered in Pasadena, Alabama.

Full Description
Benefits: The proposed R&D is intended to directly support the NASA mission of detecting and characterizing exo-Earth planets around Sun-like stars by providing advanced metrology of the optical mirrors to be used on the Habitable World Observatory. The proposed work would also be applicable to all future optical telescopes that NASA may develop. The same technology will be useful to any organization manufacturing astronomical telescopes. Additionally, the developed technology could be applied to testing the polarization-based reflective coatings applied to catadioptric lenses (pancake lenses) used in next-generation VR headsets. Axometrics already has an established customer base in the VR headset space, so we expect that this may be a significant opportunity.
