The San Mateo County Parks Department is seeking professional vegetation management services through RFP No. PARKS01-25 to implement wildfire hazard fuel reduction efforts at Junipero Serra County Park, located within the City of San Bruno. The project aims to create a 100-foot-wide shaded fuel break along park boundaries and service roads, along with hazardous tree removals within 200 feet of the park boundary, primarily targeting eucalyptus and oak woodland vegetation. These measures are part of a broader effort to reduce wildfire risk in high hazard severity areas identified by CAL FIRE, especially given the proximity of the park to high fire hazard zones. Equipment use will be limited to slopes under 30-40%, with hand work required on steeper slopes and sensitive habitats to minimize environmental impact. The contract is valued between $500,000 and $2,000,000 and is open to qualified contractors capable of delivering comprehensive vegetation management services. The project emphasizes safety, environmental sensitivity, and effectiveness in wildfire risk reduction. Interested parties are invited to submit proposals by March 3, 2025. The initiative reflects the County’s commitment to protecting natural resources and community safety through strategic land management and wildfire mitigation efforts. Full Description

The County of San Mateo (the “County” or SMC) covers most of the San Francisco Peninsula. The region covers 744 mi 2 and is home to nearly 800,000 residents. The County is comprised of 20 incorporated cities, as well as well as unincorporated areas. The County provides for the health and welfare of all people within its borders and serves as the local government for the unincorporated areas. Innovation thrives here in industries including bioscience, computer software, green technology, hospitality, financial management, health care, education, and transportation. The County prides itself on how that prosperity fosters its commitment to protecting and enhancing the health, safety, welfare, and natural resources of the community. The San Mateo County Parks Department (the “Parks Department” or the “Department”) manages County-owned parks, trails, and historic sites to preserve public lands and to provide opportunities for education and recreation. Consistent with the Department’s mission to steward our parklands, a priority management activity is wildfire fuel reduction to reduce the intensity and spread of wildfire on the landscape, reduce fuel density, and create conditions where vegetation communities are more resilient to disturbances. Junipero Serra County Park, a County-owned park located within the City of San Bruno, is adjacent to areas mapped by CAL FIRE as high fire hazard severity. The Department has identified and planned a priority wildfire hazard fuel reduction project within Junipero Serra County Park, which involves creating a 100-foot-wide shaded fuel break along sections of the park boundary and service roads, and hazardous tree removals within 200-feet of sections of the park boundary. The vegetation communities are predominantly eucalyptus and oak woodland. Equipment use will be limited to slopes less than 30-40%. On steeper slopes and where sensitive or riparian habitats are present, hand work will be required. The Parks Department is issuing Request for Proposals (RFP) No. PARKS01-25 for Professional Vegetation Management Services for the Wildfire Hazard Fuel Reduction Project at Junipero Serra County Park, seeking a responsible/responsive contractor to provide professional vegetation management services to implement the proposed fuel reduction project.
