Caltrans District 1 in Eureka is preparing a preventative maintenance project focused on preserving the structural integrity of multiple bridges along Routes 20, 29, 101, 162, 253, and 271 in Lake and Mendocino Counties. The work involves applying polyester concrete overlays, replacing joint seals, treating bridge decks with methacrylate, and cold planing or replacing a thin layer of asphalt concrete at bridge approaches and departures, all within the existing state right of way. Additional measures include placing traffic delineation and confining all equipment staging to paved surfaces and existing non-vegetated turnouts, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Construction signage, including portable changeable message signs, will be installed with negligible soil disturbance to maintain safety and minimize disruption. The project aims to extend the service life of these bridge structures through cost-effective maintenance, delaying or preventing the need for major rehabilitation or replacement, ultimately benefiting the traveling public by sustaining safe and reliable transportation infrastructure.
