State Occupational Safety and Health Surveillance Program (U60)

NIOSH, under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is seeking to fund state-based occupational safety and health surveillance programs through the State Occupational Safety and Health Surveillance Program (U60) to enhance the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data on workplace injuries, illnesses, exposures, and fatalities. The program aims to identify high-risk workers and industries, prioritize interventions, and strengthen partnerships with public health and safety stakeholders to improve worker protections. Grantees are expected to leverage existing public health infrastructure, develop new data linkages, and innovate surveillance methods to fill critical gaps in national data, with an emphasis on actionable insights that inform policy, prevention, and outreach efforts. Programs must demonstrate the ability to produce audience-specific educational materials, measure the impact of their interventions, and adapt to emerging occupational health issues. Eligible applicants include states and other jurisdictions with or without existing surveillance capacity, and the funding supports the expansion or initiation of comprehensive surveillance systems that integrate occupation-specific data into public health frameworks. The initiative promotes proactive engagement with diverse data sources and encourages collaboration across sectors to ensure findings are widely understood and used by employers, workers, and policymakers. The program is designed to build on established public health practices while fostering innovation and scalability in occupational safety and health monitoring. All funded activities must contribute to a broader national strategy for reducing work-related harm, with the ultimate goal of improving worker health outcomes across the United States.
